These new Ford and Chevy commercials. I mean really, comparing a Ford Escape to a sports car? Chevy is even worse. What kind of closet/non attention paying/unobservant people would compare the interior of a Equinox to A FREAKING GERMAN LUXURY SEDAN. GAAAHHHH.
Edit: adding offending video.

Was it because a bunch of family cars were being compared to racecars?
And you couldn't hear yourself think because all cars are like racecars?

Here's the thing, to us enthusiasts, we know it's bullshit. To the average consumer (Who still blindly buy Camrys and Corollas) who maybe hasn't stepped into a Ford or Chevy showroom since the Cavalier and Contour were competing with each other might think "Wow, they've improved that much?" and actually go take a look and like it and bam, sales.

99% of the car buying public thats who. We as enthusiasts can tell what car were in judging only by the sound the starter makes. Everyone else doesnt care and base theyre decisions on where the cupholder is or how many presets they can set the radio to.

I hate the lady who is like "I traded my Infiniti for a new Ford and its so much better and more powerful"
What kind of infininti did she have before? I doubt it was less than 5 years old.

Automotive advertising is all bunk. I saw an add for the Corolla saying it was nothing like the old Corolla. Bullshit! It still has the same platform and engines.

At least it's not the awful Nissan commercial with skiing cars. Or the old ford fusion drifting one.

It's low-com-denom marketing. OEM's know that their bread and butter doesn't come from the enthusiast buyer. Even customer loyalty takes a back seat to this kind of muddy advertising. Personally, I'd prefer to see campaigns which establish a brand or take it up-market, not try and cling to the established up-market brands by pretending beige is a selling point.
Meanwhile, Chevy is also running the same targeted marketing campaigns they always run it's just that these aren't the commercials which bombard our airwaves.

YES. It is so terrible. Who would honestly step into a huge Chevy truck, look right at the bowtie on the plastic steering wheel, and say it feels like a BMW?

The Nissan commercials that say "Cars can't snowboard" or some crap like that is the absolute best.

Ford started it, GM escalated. The problem is that this sort of marketing must work, so they keep doing it. People are stupid, fact.

I think part of it could be that people want to have a 'luxury car', so they'll compare anything they think is close to it and say it's better to justify their purchase. Maybe I'm over thinking it, or maybe I just lost more faith in intelligence.

Just like that one really dumb Ford commercial in which you had your stereotypical soccer moms stating things like "I traded my Lexus for a Ford Flex" or "The gas mileage on this Flex is better than a Range Rover". Seriously, like you said, they really can't be compared.

Nowadays, if the dash is squishy, it has infotainment, and the seats are power operated and leather, it's a luxury car to the average consumer I think.

The "*Not Actors. Real People." is what really grinds my gears every time. Obviously they're actors or they wouldn't be comparing Chevy's to Range Rovers.
